New Green & Black’s Organic Bars – Sea Salt and Burnt Toffee Review

I may be a little too late for the season for chocolate, but I still won’t let it pass without tasting the NEW Green and Black’s Organic Bars – Sea Salt and Burnt Toffee!

Green & Black's New Flavours

Of all the chocolates that I received last Christmas, the Green & Black’s Organic Bars’ new flavours Sea Salt and Burnt Toffee are just the best! It bested my boxes of Lindt, Hershey’s and other chocolates. So what makes these bars extremely good and better than the rest. Read on.

From Green & Black’s: “At Green & Black’s Organic, every new recipe is carefully thought out and rigorously taste-tested to find the perfect balance of flavour,” says Brandt Maybury, taste specialist at Green & Black’s Organic. “It all starts with our premium Trinitario cocoa beans. We take great time and care to bring out the distinct flavour that is the Green & Black’s trademark, and we believe each creation must meet our premium taste standards while making an excellent addition to the cook’s kitchen.”

I first tried the Green & Black’s Organic Sea Salt Bar. The fusion of 37% milk chocolate and delicate flakes of sea salt from the sea waters of Anglesey (a British island rich in history) just creates that one-of-a-kind taste. Unlike the regular milk chocolate, there is a hint of the saltiness but it’s not that strong. I did not want to devour the entire bar since it was just a tad sweet for me, so I checked the Green & Black’s Canada Facebook page and found a very simple recipe of a delectable homemade hot chocolate. I decided to make the beverage using the Green & Black’s Organic Sea Salt bar.

The recipe calls for 250 ml of milk gently heated and 5 – 10 squares of the chocolate bar, and guess what? It was really really good, and just the perfect hot beverage on that cold day when the Polar Vortex brought the chilly Arctic air. With more than 20 squares, I was able to make two servings of the, indeed, delectable hot chocolate which hubby and I shared!

The perfect hot chocolate to warm up on cold Winter days!

As for the Green & Black’s Organic Burnt Toffee Bar, which is surprisingly good, I kept it from hubby! We are lovers of dark chocolate and boy, when we tasted it, we just couldn’t stop from eating it. I had to keep half of the bar so that I can bring some at work! I love the crunch of pieces of Yorkshire toffee, and the rich 60% dark chocolate… ooohh so very irresistible!

Can you see the Yorkshire toffee pieces???

The only negative thing that I can say about Green & Black’s Organic bars is that it’s so good, that with just one bite, makes me crave for more! And for my hubby and me who have started counting our calories and sweets intake, it’s just so hard to put down the bar!

The two new flavours are the latest addition to the Canadian family of premium chocolate bars and are now available at select major retailers across Canada as well as in specialty food, natural health and organic food stores.

Healthy Steps (Jokari US, Inc) Unique Kitchen Helpers Review

Staying healthy and eating right is what hubby and I always try to achieve, but with the temptations of bags of chips, fast food and ready-to-cook meals, sometimes achieving that goal is a little bit of a challenge. So lately, we took that challenge, ditching the bag of chips and soda most especially in our grocery list. We don’t usually go out to dine at restaurants as I always prepare and cook dishes for us all, so that in a way is already a good sign. Aside from that, hubby and I are also in a challenge to start losing weight and to eat right portions. Thankfully, we have Healthy Steps kitchen gadgets to help us eat right, stay healthy and achieve our goals.

I received not just one, but four amazing and unique kitchen gadgets fromHealthy Steps, a division of Jokari US, Inc. Jokari has been creating and unique and inventive housewares to meet our needs. One of these unique and amazingly helpful housewares is Healthy Steps. Jokari sent me these four inventive kitchen gadgets and from day 1, I have never been happier and prepping things have become easier and healthier!

My Healthy Steps kitchen helpers! From left to right: Salad Dressing Lid, Portion Control Serving Set, Water Infuser and Total Tea Infuser.

For this review, I will be doing the first two products, the Portion Control Serving Set and the Dressing Lid. Since hubby and I are on a health challenge, the Portion Control Serving Set just came in time! What I love about this serving set is that, obviously, it controls the amount of food in our plate. To help us lose weight, eating in right portions and not going for the seconds was quite a tough challenge but we are slowly doing it.

healthy steps review

This is one serving of starch. We are rice eaters and we use the white rice. I’ve read that brown or red are perfect for dieters, but for a start of our challenge, we made use of what we have in our pantry.

The starch serving is just right actually for me, but for hubby it was really a challenge for him since he’s quite over his weight limit and that he eats voraciously (sorry hubby!). I love that this server is just the perfect size.

healthy steps

This is one serving of protein. We had baked fish for this and the size of the fish was just perfect for the server.

healthy steps review

Half serving of vegetables. We had sauteed vegetable for this and for me, one half serving of vegetable was enough for me.

healthy steps review

A plateful of healthy servings!

What I love about the Healthy Steps Portion Control Serving set is that it is a complete system and it helps promote healthy eating habits. I know I always go for the seconds but with this serving set, I am able to control, that makes me watch over my calorie count, my food intake, thus helping me (and hubby) lose weight. I also love that it’s very use to use and clean. The packaging also included healthy hints and some recipes. Here are some of the healthy tips:

• Once you have your portion, do not go back for seconds
• Eating a variety of vegetables can help reduce the risk of stroke, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and help protect against cancers
• Use smaller dishes when eating meals at home
• Sensible portions help maintain a healthy weight

I really love this serving set, hubby and I are really up for a challenge with portioning our meals! It was hard for the first few meals, but we are hoping to get there.

Now on to the Healthy Steps Dressing Lid.

What I usually notice when I make and eat salad at home is the pool of uneaten dressing and for me, it is just a waste. The tendency too is to add more dressing to the salad. But with the Healthy Steps Dressing Lid, I can measure and dispense one serving of dressing! This dressing lid is for plastic bottles only because you have to squeeze the plastic bottle of dressing to fill one serving size chamber.

healthy steps review

The salad dressing bottle plus the dressing lid just sits perfectly on a shelf in our fridge.

One gentle squeeze at the bottom of the salad bottle will fill the chamber, just open the lid and pour the dressing, and that’s it! I have a healthy portion and serving of salad, no more pools of uneaten dressing, no more waste, and 1 serving is equivalent to 2 tbsp of salad dressing.

healthy steps review

There’s my salad. I love to have hard boiled eggs in my salad, hubby and I shared this salad though.

I love the Dressing Lid because it is also very easy to use and to clean I just detach the straw. The packaging also includes healthy hints and salad mix-ins like adding healthy toppers for nutritional kick such as sunflower seeds, dried cranberries or mandarin oranges.

I still have two other kitchen helpers fro Healthy Steps (Jokari US, Inc.) to review. I wanted to do a two-part so that it won’t be a lengthy review, so please do watch out for that.

Thank you very much Jokari US Inc for this wonderful opportunity! You really helped us in our health’s challenge! If you want to know more about these amazing products, visit Jokari US, Inc, follow them on Facebook and onTwitter. These can be perfect Christmas gifts as well!

Snackbox (November) Review and #Giveaway

I received a box full of goodies from Snackbox for the month of November and boy, was I so giddy and thrilled to open the box. When I got it at the post office, I thought it was a little heavy so I wondered what could be inside. Getting a Snackbox is like opening up a Christmas present!

snackbox review

So before I present to you what goodies came in the box, let me tell you more about Snackbox. Snackbox is a subscription service that ships healthy, natural and delicious snacks to your door every month. There are three subscriptions to choose from, and each box comes with 10 – 12 items and has a guide where you can buy the items and find out more about it. Snackbox has been created to help you discover, learn about and try new and healthy snack food, so you don’t have to stand long in the grocery aisle deciding which snack food is good and healthy for you and your family. They also taste test the products and analyze what’s in them to give you (us) the better snack food, not just those ordinary chips and crackers, but the healthy and more nutritious ones.

So okay, my first Snackbox is just so amazing and all the products are indeed delicious and here it is:

snackbox review

What’s inside:

• Enerjive Quinoa Skinny Crackers. These are one of the yummiest crackers I’ve tried. I like that I can actually taste the rock salt in it and it’s not too sweet, not too salty, just the perfect taste and crunch. I can bring this to work everyday!

snackbox review

• Arora Creations Gobi Spice, La Fourmi Fruit & Nut Medley, Cocolico Toffee Coconut Dark Chocolate. I was not a fan of dark chocolate before but working in a store that sells organic and healthy stuff change my mind about dark chocolate. I buy dark chocolate now and this one from Cocolico is just so good! It tastes better than the ones I buy at the store. I love the toffee and coconut combination… and it was the first item gone! 🙂 Hubby and I shared it because we both love dark chocolate! The fruit and nut medley went to hubby’s lunch bag! He said it will be for his lunch at work.

• Lara Bar and True to Nature Hemp Protein Bar. I have tried Larabar before and after trying it, I was stuck to buying the other brand for my snacks at work. I really did not like it that much, but since the one I got has coconut cream, I will see if I will like it this time. The other bar, I brought to work yesterday and it was really good compared to the Larabar.

snackbox review

• Pirate’s Booty Cheese Puffs and Sensible Portions Veggie Chips. I have been meaning to try these Veggie Chips but because the store where I work does not sell the small bags and for me a $5 bag of chips is quite expensive, so I am happy to have gotten this snack-size veggie chips. I wonder if my son’s school allows chips for snacks or lunch, these veggie chips are made from real potatoes and flavoured with tomatoes and spinach. If they do, I would send a handful of this in my son’s lunchbox! 🙂

snackbox review

• Bella Viva Orchards Pear Slices. This is my perfect and healthy on-the-go snacks. I don’t usually eat lunch so this would be one of my alternatives! I can even send this in my son’s lunch!

snackbox review

• ITO EN Teas’s Tea Unsweetened Green Tea and My Smoothie Green. These two are just the perfect way to end snack time! I love green tea and the smoothie? Delicious! I can’t believe that it’s power packed with nutrients and the combination of mango, guava, spinach, nettle, wheatgrass, broccoli and green tea is awesome!

snackbox review

Overall, I am happy (I have a happy tummy!) and satisfied (more than satisfied) with my first box of goodies from Snackbox. I don’t feel guilty at all compared to gobbling up a whole bag of greasy junk food and gulping down an ice-cold soda. It does make a difference when you try new and the more healthy stuff. I mean since August, we have ditched the junk food in our grocery list, but the soda (ginger ale that is) has yet to go! So with the nutritious and healthy stuff from Snackbox, I don’t have to worry anymore, I already know where to go and what to pick at the grocery, I mean the snack aisle, thanks to Snackbox!

Now I don’t want to munch all these healthy snack food alone, Snackbox is sharing this with you, my dear readers!
